6 Tips on springing forward eating healthy this summer

Summer has arrived; and literally like most people new years was only five months ago. Which means summer is less layers and beach attire of all sizes. I know, it can be the tell tale of all the things we were enjoying in the winter season. But, what really matters is eating healthy while getting in shape while being the best you.
According to www.womenhealth.org, healthy eating  improves your health and helps prevent disease. It means choosing different types of healthy food from all of the food groups (fruits, vegetables, grains, dairy, and proteins), most of the time, in the correct amounts for you. Healthy eating also means not eating a lot of foods with added sugar, sodium (salt), and saturated and trans fats. "What you eat and drink is influenced by where you live, the types of foods available in your community and in your budget, your culture and background, and your personal preferences.
Often, healthy eating is affected by things that are not directly under your control, like how close the grocery store is to your house or job. Focusing on the choices you can control will help you make small changes in your daily life to eat healthier."
I've been a size four and at my largest a size fourteen, and never kept a scale. I just changed my eating habits and took accountability on where I needed to make changes in my life. For many women we believe that we must fit a certain criteria to feel beautiful based on our size. But, what really matters is eating healthy while getting in shape while being the best you. Nothing to panic about you still have time to reach your goals eating healthy while embracing those curves.

Here are six tips to get you started:


1) Start your day off eating a balance breakfast with plenty of fiber, fruit, & dairy
2) Keeping a journal of your intake will keep you accountable on getting healthy
3) Meditation is not only good for the soul, it keeps the mind centered on positivity
4) During lunch eat leafy green vegetables with protein with a simple can of tuna in water
5) Instead of driving to a local store, challenge yourself to walk while getting your  cardio in
6) Most importantly, plenty of rest and plenty of water

Quench Your Thirst: Berry Lemonade

INGREDIENTS
  • 8 c. cold water
  • 2 c. sugar
  • 3 c. fresh lemon juice
  • 3 strip lemon peel
  • 1 c. raspberries
  • 1 c. blackberries
  • ice cubes
  • seltzer or club soda
DIRECTIONS
  1. Prepare sugar syrup: In 4-quart saucepan, heat 4 cups water with sugar and lemon peel to boiling over high heat, stirring occasionally. Cover saucepan and boil 3 minutes. Remove saucepan from heat.
  2. Meanwhile, in food processor, pulse berries until pureed. Pour into medium-mesh sieve set over large bowl and press berry mixture with back of spoon to remove seeds; discard seeds.
  3. Remove peel from syrup; stir syrup into berry puree with lemon juice and remaining 4 cups water. Makes 13 cups. Pour into large pitcher with tight-fitting lid. Cover and refrigerate until cold, at least 3 hours or up to 2 days. Serve over ice. Add seltzer to taste; garnish with berries and lemon slices.

Potato Latkes

​  INGREDIENTS
    • 1 pound potatoes
    • 1/2 cup finely chopped onion
    • 1 large egg, lightly beaten
    • 1/2 teaspoon salt
    • 1/2 to 3/4 cup olive oil
    • Accompaniments: sour cream and applesauce
           PREPARATION
    1. Preheat oven to 250°F.
    2. Peel potatoes and coarsely grate by hand, transferring to a large bowl of cold water as grated. Soak potatoes 1 to 2 minutes after last batch is added to water, then drain well in a colander.
    3. Spread grated potatoes and onion on a kitchen towel and roll up jelly-roll style. Twist towel tightly to wring out as much liquid as possible. Transfer potato mixture to a bowl and stir in egg and salt.
    4. Heat 1/4 cup oil in a 12-inch nonstick skillet over moderately high heat until hot but not smoking. Working in batches of 4 latkes, spoon 2 tablespoons potato mixture per latke into skillet, spreading into 3-inch rounds with a fork. Reduce heat to moderate and cook until undersides are browned, about 5 minutes. Turn latkes over and cook until undersides are browned, about 5 minutes more. Transfer to paper towels to drain and season with salt. Add more oil to skillet as needed. Keep latkes warm on a wire rack set in a shallow baking pan in oven.

According to Colon Cancer Alliance, colon Cancer is the second leading cause of cancer- related deaths  in the United States,where 1-20 on an average are at individual risk according to factors that may  contribute to family history. For example, people with first -degree relative ( parent,sibling or off-spring) who has had colon cancer have  two to three times likely  to develop the disease. while cases has risen to 90%  of people 50 years old & older.The Because of the lack of public awareness of the disease the funding is limited for research.Early detection is the Key to preventing  and treatment will not only save ones life also letting a patient know what options are available to them.

Screening

~Colonoscopy  
What happens:The inside of the rectum & entire colon are examined using a long,lighted tube called a colonoscope.
when to get screened ( if not high risk):
Every ten years starting at the age of 50 .

~FlexibleSigmoidoscopy  
What happens:Examines your rectum and lower part of the colon with a lighted tube called a sigmoidoscope.
 When to get screened (if not high risk) Every five years starting at age 50

~Virtual Colonoscopy 
What happens: uses x-rays and computers to take 2 
or 3- dimensional images of the colon & rectum.
When to get screened (if not high risk) Every five years at the age of 50

~Double-Contrast Barium Enema (DCBE)
What happens:Air and barium are pumped into rectum. The solution will show polyps or tumors on x-rays

National Alzheimer's Awareness Month

​According to National Institute on aging,there is no cure for Alzheimer's the symptoms varies from person to person.The progression of the disease is the same in general stages.Approximately 5 million Americans  are effected by Alzheimers and it has increased significantly and will most likely triple by 2050.It is the 6th leading cause of death in the United States.The early signs such as, decline in memory,word finding,visual/spatial and impaired reasoning (or) judgment are the possible early stages of The disease.

Below is the stages of Alzheimer's and symptoms:

➡️Mild Alzheimer's disease

As the disease progresses, people experience greater memory loss and other cognitive difficulties. Problems can include:

🔺wandering and getting lost
🔺trouble handling money and paying bills
🔺repeating questions
🔺taking longer to complete normal daily tasks
     losing things or misplacing them in odd places
🔺personality and behavior changes
 

➡️Moderate Alzheimer's disease

In this stage, damage occurs in areas of the brain that control language, reasoning, sensory processing, and conscious thought. Symptoms may include:

🔺increased memory loss and confusion
🔺problems recognizing family and friends
🔺inability to learn new things
🔺difficulty carrying out multistep tasks such as          
​🔺getting dressed
🔺problems coping with new situations
     hallucinations, delusions, and paranoia
      impulsive behavior

  ➡️Sever Alzheimer's disease

People with severe Alzheimer's cannot communicate and are completely dependent on others for their care. Near the end, the person may be in bed most or all of the time as the body shuts down. Their symptoms often include:

🔺inability to communicate
🔺weight loss
🔺seizures
🔺skin infections
🔺difficulty swallowing
🔺groaning, moaning, or grunting
🔺increased sleeping
🔺lack of control of bowel and bladder
